Bullying in any form is highly undesirable, be it on the roads, in schools or colleges, at your offices, or over the internet through various social platforms. Today we will be talking about one such form of it, which is Cyberbullying and what can be possibly done if you or someone else faces it. Let’s start our discussion by understanding what cyberbullying exactly is!

What is Cyberbullying?

When someone faces bullying over a digital platform through technologies, it is termed as Cyberbullying. It may not necessarily be on social media platforms only, it could be through messaging, gaming platforms, or even through cell phones. Just like bullying in real life, it is done over some technologies. It could be an attempt to scare, shame, make angry, or frustrate someone. It includes sharing, sending, or basically spreading any false or negative news or piece of information, be it through posts, messages, mails, texts, etc, to insult or harm someone. 

Some of the most frequent places where cyberbullying happens would be:

  • Social media platforms.
  • Through texts or messaging apps
  • Cyberbullying through various online chatting sites
  • In online groups of gaming, etc.

Cyberbullying is a very common practice that has been observed for a long time now. It is equally bad or may be worse than real life bullying because all the bad deeds or insults are being done in front of a greater audience and are visible most probably to many more people. Especially on social media apps where we are connected not only to our loved ones and acquaintances, but unknown people can also view or comment on our profile. Any bad comment or an insulting post will be seen by all and that fear is unexplainable as well as unbearable, at times. 

If in real life bullying, our actual respect gets reduced or hampered, then in cyberbullying it is our digital reputation that gets damaged. And since it is being done through a platform, it does have records and can affect the digital reputation of not just the person who is bullying, person who gets bullied, but also those who participate in it as well. 

At times, we don’t understand what exactly comes under cyberbullying. We write or post things without thinking about how the other person involved would think or feel, which leads to this entire situation. We assume from our end itself that the joke which I’m creating will be taken in a healthy manner only by the other person and this is completely unfair. How can we assume what we feel and the next person should feel as well! Some common examples of cyberbullying could be:

  • Spreading false news about someone to embarrass or insult them through social media.
  • With the aid of fake accounts, insulting or saying bad things by pretending to be someone else.
  • Sending abusive or threatful messages, media or emails to someone.
  • Spreading personal information to lead somebody down.
  • Causing humiliation and even leading to criminal offenses.

Impact of Cyberbullying

It is very obvious that after seeing any harsh comment or false accusations nobody would feel nice or good about themselves. Some people tend to ignore such hatred and move ahead in their lives, but what about those who couldn’t? 

Yes, these small incidents can really affect someone’s life adversely. People tend to overthink about all these incidents and the fear of losing their digital reputation can have a huge impact on someone’s thought process. Thus, it could lead to various health issues related to mental health such as depression, anxiety, social panic, loneliness, low self confidence, etc. The impact of cyberbullying could be so harsh that even though cyberbullying gets stopped, the fear created due to it could stay lifelong. 

What to do?

It is the need of the hour to stop all forms of bullying, be it in real life or online. So here comes the most important part about what you can do to stop cyberbullying. The following few tips can really help you in trying to stop having a negative surrounding and live more peaceful:

  • If possible, you should talk to the bully, in person, and ask them to stop firmly. Make yourself very clear and direct. It is not you who is doing anything wrong but it was them.
  • There are chances that you probably don’t know who the person is. In such cases, you should stop entertaining such people. Block them from all platforms possible. Bullies generally want to get a reaction from you and if you stop giving it, half of their game will be over then and there.
  • Try to save such chats, emails, etc or take screenshots maybe. So that if you are required to take this matter to someone else you have some solid proof to support your point.
