What Is The Business Model Of Food Delivery?
Any business model briefly talks about the various leading factors related to the entire company or business that would result in a profitable business. The products and policies, finances and future marketings are discussed which are contributing or might contribute to the profits are included in it.
A food delivery business model should speak about its USPs (Unique Selling Points) and what unique it has to offer on the table which others don’t and won’t. To have a successful and strong foot in the food industry, it is essential to have a nice business model. Today we will be discussing more about the business model of food delivery. So let’s get started!
Types of Business Model of Food Delivery
We can classify the different ideas and club them into three broad categories. They have their own pros and cons which we will discuss as well. One of the most frequently used models for online food delivery remains to be having a marketplace business model.
1. Model with Order Only Option
As the name suggests, in this model you will be acting as a platform to bridge the gap between the end-user and restaurants wherein you provide users with a single place with various food options to choose from and the restaurant gets to reach out to a larger audience all in one go. A small brief on the roles of customers and restaurants will give you a better idea.
For Customer:
- They can easily place their orders from applications and websites available.
- Once the order gets confirmed, they receive a notification and can wait for their food.
For Restaurant:
- Once the order is placed by the customers, the restaurant gets notified about it and confirms the order.
- A delivery boy picks the food from the restaurant and takes it to the customer. A contact number is also provided for any queries(regarding address, etc) to him.
After this, let us focus on the different advantages and challenges that come up with this model.
Pros:
In this model, you are not dealing with the customer for on-time food delivery, thus you will not be held responsible for irregularities in the order delivered. And even then you can charge a handsome amount of fees for rendering the services you offer.
Cons:
As you need to attract customers to your platform, you need a great marketing team for managing your strategies and plannings for the same. But as the restaurant is the one rendering delivery services, your good reviews somewhere rely on them and it is not always a good idea.
2. Model with Order as well as Delivery Option
With this model, the delivery part is also taken care of along with providing a registering platform to the restaurants, for registering their menu without worrying about the delivery part. Let’s go through the functioning of the customers, restaurants, and delivery as well.
For Customer:
- There isn’t much alteration, they place their order as done earlier.
For Restaurant:
- On getting notified about the order being placed, this time the restaurant does not need to worry about the delivering part.
For Delivery:
- Now the delivery of food comes under your responsibility. The delivery boy gets notified about the food order details and his picking point for the same.
- It would be his responsibility to pick the food order from the restaurant and deliver it to the customers doorsteps.
Now that your role has slightly increased, here are the pros and cons.
Pros:
You can charge the restaurants for offering on your platform and the customers for a certain delivery charge depending upon how far the location is. You are more accountable for making your business more successful as now you train your delivery persons a few basic things and ensure getting better reviews and feedback.
Cons:
In this model, your responsibilities have increased and thus, you are required to put in more effort and resources. It could be in the training of your delivery team, for monitoring their performances or ensuring on-time deliveries.
3. Full-Stack Model
This model is quite different from the other two. In this model, you will be playing all the parts from cooking to showcasing it over a platform for customers to delivering it to them. This model is being highly opted by those cooking startups who want to do everything in-house. The food is prepared in cloud kitchens and then delivered.
Pros:
Since you don’t rely on any third-party, you can make huge profits from your business and its success.
Cons:
As you need to set up a huge kitchen there is a huge initial cost needed which is slightly tough for startups. You are responsible for deliveries too thus, making them on time is also going to be a crucial factor.
